SHIPPING UPDATE – We try to pack and ship your item on the next business day.  We are however currently experiencing shipping delays on some services outside of our control due to the current Covid outbreak and a number of other issues delaying postal services globally.  Currently this is impacting our Economy in particular but we are seeing odd issues pop up on all services to all locations.  We advise delays on all services, and in particular long delays if using the Economy option.  You can check your estimated delay here.  A tracking number will be sent (usually on the following business day) from NZ Post and these do sometimes go in to junk mail so make sure you check there.  You can also use the same tracking number to track the final leg delivery through AusPost in Australia or USPS in the US.

Getting Lost is a real business staffed by real people!  We make and send our games from our home in Auckland, NZ.  We’re also a small business.  There’s me (Cat – owner & inventor), my husband James, my sister Jo (who handles all our Operations), our 3 kids and their friends who help out when we can wrangle them and our awesome team of part time helpers Ingrid & Phillipa.  I read and reply to every e-mail that comes through but occasionally they may go to spam or if I’m busy it may take me a few days to get back to you.  If you don’t get a reply, please try me again.  


Q. Can you play the Getting Lost Game outside of New Zealand?

A. Yes – we have sent thousands of games all around the world!  The misdirections on the cards are designed to be generic so you can play where ever you are in the world (the only exception is our Out of Town Edition which has some “Kiwi-isms” and our Aussie Edition which has some Australian specific misdirections)  If you come across something that is not valid for your area (head to a beach and you are too far inland) simply draw another card or adapt the card for your area.  Our cards have NZ scenes on the back of them so you can have a little bit of NZ (or plan your next NZ holiday).


Q. Can I order Getting Lost Games outside of New Zealand?


A. Yes, we ship daily to Australia, USA, UK and Canada.  If you want to send outside of these countries contact us – [email protected] – and we can give you a quote for shipping. 🙂


Q. How long does postage take?

A. Usually we package orders within 1 business day of receiving them (although over Christmas and other busy periods this may be a 2-3 days).  We send all our items with NZ Post and they are amazing.  We can’t guarantee delivery within a certain time frame but the below is the timelines our couriers work to. Please note that over busy time (Christmas, Fathers Day, Mothers Day etc) these times may increase.  Currently we are seeing delays in the network internationally with Covid restrictions and heavy demand so delivery times will be longer in some cases.

  • NZ – Auckland – overnight (week days)
  • NZ – North Island – 1 – 2 Working Days
  • NZ – South Island – 2 Working Days
  • NZ – Rural Delivery – add another 2 working days.
  • Australia – we provide three different services – Economy with a target delivery of 6-12 business days, Priority with a Target of 3-8 Business Days or Premium with a target of 2-5 business days.  You can select these options in the cart once entering your address and selecting calculate shipping.
  • USA – 4-12 working days (we provide two different services and currently recommend upgrading to our priority service for faster delivery)
  • Canada / UK – 6-10 working days

Tracking is sent as soon as the order is set up on our end (usually next business day) so if you haven’t received this check in your junk mail or send us and e-mail at [email protected]


Q. Can I play the Getting Lost Game walking?


A. Yes, you can play the Getting Lost Game walking. Only 8 of our 26 Misdirection cards can’t be played walking. What a lot of walkers also do is add on our Walkers Edition. This pack is 10 direction only cards (turn left, head North etc)


Q. Why can’t I leave my suitcase in direct sun?


A. Our Getting Lost Game cases are made here in NZ with a plant based plastic (PLA) and are biodegradable. They are really durable and allow you to keep your cards safe and are a better for the planet plastic.  They do have a lower melt point than other plastics though so please don’t leave them in a hot car in direct sunlight as they will warp.  We find a cool glove box or under the seat works well and ours have lived happily, warp free in these spots for years.


Q. Is it made in NZ?


A. Yes, our Getting Lost Games are made in NZ. The only exception is the compass which is an optional add on to the game.


Q. Are you going to make the Getting Lost Game as an app?


A. Not yet, but watch this space…


Q. What age range is it for?


A. Everyone! We have friends, families, couples, grandparents and work groups playing the game. The card reader has a bit of reading to do so for children not yet reading they will need some help. Due to small parts we don’t recommend this for under 3’s.


Q. When do you pick a new card?


A. It’s entirely up to you. You can play each direction until you reach the end of the road, at each intersection, once the direction is executed (for example as soon as you turn right) or you can set a timer for each direction.


Q. How much is postage?


A. It depends on where you are.  You can enter your address in the cart and you will be provided with a price before you proceed to the checkout.


Q. Can I cancel my order?

A. We are only able to cancel orders prior to them shipping.    


Q. Does the te reo version have English translation or is it all in te reo Maori?


A. Yes, English on one side of the cards, te reo Maori on the other side.


Q. Could I play it for a work Christmas Party or Team Building Activity?


A. Yes! It’s a great team building activity. Send your teams off in groups or all head off on a bus together! We also provide pricing for corporate gifts so you can send your staff or suppliers off to get lost in their holidays…


Q. How long does the Getting Lost Game take to play?


A. Our Adventurers or Standard Editions take 4 hours if you don’t impose any limits and the head for home card is pretty near the back (which it always seems to be for us). You can play a shorter version by playing with a smaller card deck or imposing time limits?


Q. Can I buy the Getting Lost Game in stores?

Q. Will you donate a game to our charity?


A. We are contacted all the time to donate to charities. We donate a number of our games to the Ronald McDonald house to give kids and their families something fun and low cost to do while they are in hospital and we support Baby Loss charities. We also have the Feel Good Edition where we donate 15% of sales each month.  Alternatively you can buy this edition for your charity at 30% to resell.


Q. Can I get a discount if I buy multiple games?


A. Maybe… If you are purchasing more than 10 games send us an e-mail and we can set you up as a Wholesale Customer. From time to time we do offer gift with purchase so look out for these on our Facebook page or sign up to our mailing list to make sure you don’t miss out.


Q. How long do you follow a blue car for?


A. This one is entirely up to you. Getting Lost is designed for completely random exploration so you want to head in a direction not chosen by you but someone else which is the idea here.  It goes without saying that you would never want to make anyone else feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Q. What’s the difference in colours?


A. The game is the same in each of our coloured cases. Our core colours are Blue, Green, Pink and Charcoal. From time to time we add limited edition colours and currently have a Yellow Edition as a tribute to James Step Dad who passed away last year. These are only available until the end of the run so once they sell out they are gone.


Q. Can you play the Getting Lost Game outside of NZ?


A. Yes! I’ve played it on Sentosa Island in Singapore – you can read about that over here. And we have sent hundreds of cases all around the world.  The cards (excluding the Aussie Edition) have NZ locations on the back of them and the Summer Pack and Out of Town Edition use a few “Kiwi-isms!”  If you come across something that is not valid for your area (head to a beach and you are too far inland) simply draw another card or adapt the card for your area.


Q. What is the best place you have got lost with the Getting Lost Game?


A. Me and Kiki, just as the sun was setting over Arkles Bay. The water was flat and tinged with pinks and purples and a pod of dolphins came through. It was magical.


Q. Have you ever got really lost?


A. No where we haven’t been able to GPS our way out of yet!


Q. Where is Getting Lost based?


A. We are based in Birkenhead, Auckland in New Zealand.


Q. Do I need a specific Getting Lost Game for my region?


A. No, you can play the game anywhere in NZ or the world. If you out of the main centres (or heading that way) you may want to add on an Out of Town Edition to the main game too.  Please note the game is created in NZ so there may be a few Kiwi phrases!  If you come across one that is not relevant for your area simply skip it or change it to suit.


Q. What currency are your games in and do they include duty and taxes?


A. Our games are shown in NZ Dollars/US dollars or Australian dollars where your geo settings reflect your country location and include NZ and Australian GST where applicable.  If you are ordering outside of NZ or Australia, this does not include any taxes or duties that your local government may apply.


Q. How did you translate the Te Reo Edition of The Getting Lost Game?


A. We worked with Rosie and Kuruho who make a Maori Language Game called the Kaupapa Game. After they had translated our misdirections we all worked with an certified Te Reo Maori Translator to ensure that our translations were perfect.


Q. Can you come and talk at our event or school?


A. Yes. Cat has been involved with a number of schools with everything from helping them to create their own game to how to grow a successful business.


Q. Can I add my own Getting Lost Card?


A. Yes. We have made 3 marriage proposal cards in the past and we’re happy to partner with businesses to create misdirection cards specifically for their customers or staff. Contact us for bespoke pricing at [email protected]


Q. Why won’t my compass work?


A. Usually because it is not flat. Compasses need to be laid flat to work properly. Our compasses should all point in the general direction the should. Remember though that these are a tool for Getting Lost so they shouldn’t be used or relied upon as a life saving device.


Q. Why is do you offer two options for your booster packs?


A. Our booster packs have a “naked” and packaged option. The naked option gives us a chance to both reduce our packaging footprint and offer the game to you at a lower price. The packaged option is perfect for gifting , if you’ve got too many cards to keep in your cases (we hear you!) or if you just plain like the look of them.


Q. Can I buy the case separately?


A. Yes! You can now buy our custom Getting Lost Cases separately. Perfect if you run out of room in your first case or want a few colours to interchange…


Q. What taxes are included?


A. We are a NZ based store and prices include include NZ GST and from 1 November 2021 GST in Australia.  Currently we do not include sales tax elsewhere (ie. VAT).
