Thames has always held a special place in my heart.
When I was a child we used to camp at Dicksons Park (just out of Thames) and I have endless memories of the fun I used to have with my brothers, sister and cousins as the 8 of us roamed wild and free through the camp ground and the streams in the many weeks we spent there each year.
In later years it became again like a second home when James and I decided after 25 years of friendship that we may be just a little madly in love with each other. Thames is home to the majority of James and his daughters family and prior to moving up here James had a house and paddock on the Hauraki Plains so we know Thames pretty well and are frequent visitors. And I have to say that Thames just keeps on getting better.
For me, the big draw cards for Thames are;
– It’s just over an hour from Auckland
– It’s the gateway to the Coromandel
– It has some very drive worthy places to eat
– It has loads of free things to do
We reckon Thames has a bit of something for everyone to make it easy we’ve sorted it into different things you may want to do in Thames with a picture to get you really curious (don’t worry – we won’t send you off anywhere you will stay right on Getting Lost). We’ve also included a few places in neighbouring towns, but nothing more than a half hour drive out of Thames.
So here we have it – the best things to do in Thames…
The best place to go for a bike ride
The best spot to soak your troubles away (that isn’t James Mum’s house)
The best place to watch the sun set
The best place to get in touch with nature
The best place to fish – the point of Wilson’s Bay
So head on down (or up) – it’s worth exploring!
