With a great vibe and delicious food it’s little wonder that Cafe Melbourne is a favourite with locals and visitors alike. We’re definitely fans!
We need to stop saying that we are surprised when we find amazing places to eat in small towns because New Zealand is dotted with them. I love eating out (unfortunately for my waist size) and with a 17 year career in advertising I have seen my fair share of great restaurants both here and overseas and some of the best are little places we find in small towns. Cafe Melbourne certainly fits into this category.
Cafe Melbourne is modelled on a Melbourne restaurant and it certainly has that vibe. The story, proudly displayed on the wall, of a Thames boy and a Melbourne girl instantly warm you to the place before the food even arrives.
The food when it does come is quick and oh so yummy.
James and I went by ourselves for lunch on a day when we didn’t have the kids and we got the tasting plate which was not only great value but really delicious – particularly the pork belly.
And the desert cabinet…. I tried to be constrained (for the before mentioned waistline issues) but failed miserably at the sight of a chocolate brownie.
Fortunately for me the Hauraki Rail Trail is just across the road so after an hour riding I felt suitably justified at tucking in to this for afternoon tea.
They are easy to find on the main street in Thames and you can find out more about them here.
