Kiwi Summer Road Trip

Summer on the road

I knew we drove a lot this summer – what I didn’t realise is that we drove for 27 hours, or over 2,000 kms.

This summer we took our longest break yet – 3 whole glorious weeks off to spend with the kids.

We separated our holiday into 3 legs which I would thoroughly recommend to anyone with a one night stop in at home in between each leg.

So here’s what 2,000km looks like to us…

Leg one – Relax at Waitete Bay. Fish, swim and explore.

We found deserted coves, we picked cockles for lunch and perfected our boogie boarding.

Leg two – camping, catching up with friends, swimming, jumping and kids gone wild.

It was our second holiday camping at Pataua (you can read about our first time at this Northland paradise here) and this time we bought the pop up camper with us which was absolutely awesome. We lost the kids for hours on end as we sat in the sun and talked with friends while they made huts with new found friends – with the occasional crackle of the walkie talkie to let us know they were OK.

Leg three – our epic 5 day journey through the central north island. Catching up with family and discovering new roads.

We travelled to Tirau, Taupo, Napier, Hastings, Palmerston North and New Plymouth (plus a few places in-between) in an unforgettable adventure across some of the most beautiful terrain.

Now we’re back home. The kids are off with their other parents for a week on another adventure. James is off in Northland somewhere riding his Harley with a friend. And I’m enjoying the quiet, writing and sharing my adventures with you all. I hope we inspire you for a summer on the road.
