The Getting Lost Game is a real world travel adventure game created in New Zealand and played around the world to get wonderfully lost and explore new places.

This kit is the perfect starter pack for people wanting to find hidden gems of the beaten track, while exploring their backyard.  And yes, you can play it anywhere in the world.

It contains 26 “misdirection cards” which give you random directions to (things like turn left, follow a blue car, head in the direction the wind is blowing) to get you being mindfully random in your exploration.

The Getting Lost Game is designed by me and my husband James, with help (and a lot of road testing) from our 3 daughters.  We create, assemble and ship them from our home in Birkenhead, Auckland and where ever we can we use local suppliers to reduce our impact on the world.

Description

The Getting Lost Game – a unique game created in New Zealand and played around the world to get wonderfully lost and explore new places.

This kit is the perfect starter pack for people wanting to find hidden gems of the beaten track, while exploring their backyard.  It contains 26 “misdirection cards” which give you random directions to (things like turn left, follow a blue car, head in the direction the wind is blowing) to get you being mindfully random in your exploration.

The cards in the Adventurers Edition are the same as those in the Standard Edition but in a custom designed plant based plastic suitcase instead of a cardboard box.

The Getting Lost Game is designed and made by us – Cat & James (Kiwi Travel Bloggers), with help (and a lot of road testing) from our 3 daughters.  We create, assemble and ship them from our home in Birkenhead, Auckland and where ever we can we use local suppliers to reduce our impact on the world.

You can find out about how we designed the game here, ideas on how to play the game here.  Or you can listen to an interview with Cat over here about how to play and the idea behind the game.

We encourage you to make your own rules and the ways you can play it are endless and entirely adaptable to you.

Here’s some ideas we’ve had though…

      • For quick play, pick a new direction card at each intersection
      • For a game that lasts a couple of hours pick a new card every 5 minutes
      • Want to keep it simple?  Just keep in the direction cards (left, right, north, south etc) and take ones more likely to take you further from home
      • Looking for a weekend get away?  Play the game until you get the “head for home” card and then find a hotel or campground in what ever town you are in when you get the card
      • Don’t want to stop for treats?  Take the treat and drink card out before you start playing
      • Arrive in a new city and set off walking with the cards – take a new direction at each intersection
      • Want to surprise someone?  Add in your own card in the middle (we even make proposal cards and have been part of four proposals already!)

The Adventurers Edition comes in a suitcase designed and printed here in New Zealand using plant based, biodegradable PLA.  It measures 100mm x 85mm x 24mm.  Your case fits the main game plus one additional 10 card booster pack.  If you need more space for extra cards we sell extra suitcases (we call these Matching Luggage) too.

Each card measures 91mm x 55mm and they’re also printed in NZ.  All packs have 26 cards with misdirection cards on one side and NZ locations (known as our inspiration cards) on the other side.

The mini compass is an optional add on (please note, this is not NZ made – the rest of your game is though).  It is 20mm (so please don’t give this to under 3’s as it is a choking hazard).  Just like Superman wears his undies on the outside we recommend you put your compass on the outside of your case too for the best fit.  Just loop the cord around the handle – easy!

The game is ideally suited to outdoor play and there are a few cards you won’t be able to use if you are on foot (like follow a white car – unless you are very quick!).  But if you do want to play on foot we recommend you add on the Booster Pack for more walking misdirections.

Please remember to play the game responsibly and make sure that you stay safe and able to get yourself back home at all times.  The compass is a toy designed for playing the game only so please don’t rely on this for directions.  Please don’t leave your case in a hot car – it will warp!  If you are leaving it in a car tuck it under a seat or in the glove box or somewhere cool.

Our Terms and Conditions are here but if you have any other questions please get in touch.

So much fun! We often play this with our children and our aunty (In her 50’s). We all love it, and spend a lot of time laughing. The perfect gift for families at Christmas.

  2. Jill

So much fun and everyone loved the unexpected activities and adventures. The highlight for the girls was dancing on the grass outside the car and the happy smiles and toots from passing cars. Loved the lockdown edition too.

Such a great way to explore and spend a day off devices. We can’t wait to play again and see where we end up!

Just a whole bunch of fun, We ended up at a historic pub where we stayed for the night (we tossed the go home card away). I’ve now bought plenty more for Xmas gifts.

We loved this game! It was such a fun, low-pressure day out, and created a wonderful sense of adventure by not knowing where we would end up. Our lives are so full and organised, it was great to just let go and follow where the cards took us.

Unfortunately due to all the lockdowns we haven’t been able to play very much. None of our grandchildren live in our area so not being able to travel to meet up with them has limited our playtime.. However they have loved playing it, get really excited to see where we will end up. We put a time limit on how far we go, and they have fun finding their way home as well.
