The Getting Lost Game is a real world travel adventure game created in New Zealand and played around the world to get wonderfully lost and explore new places.

This kit is the perfect starter pack for people wanting to find hidden gems of the beaten track, while exploring their backyard.  And yes, you can play it anywhere in the world.

It contains 26 “misdirection cards” which give you random directions to (things like turn left, follow a blue car, head in the direction the wind is blowing) to get you being mindfully random in your exploration.

You can choose one of our 4 coloured suitcases made out of plant based plastic or a cardboard box for your Adventurers Edition.

The Getting Lost Game is designed by me and my husband James, with help (and a lot of road testing) from our 3 daughters.  We create, assemble and ship them from our home in Birkenhead, Auckland and where ever we can we use local suppliers to reduce our impact on the world.

Description

The Getting Lost Game – a unique game created in New Zealand and played around the world to get wonderfully lost and explore new places.

This kit is the perfect starter pack for people wanting to find hidden gems of the beaten track, while exploring their backyard.  It contains 26 “misdirection cards” which give you random directions to (things like turn left, follow a blue car, head in the direction the wind is blowing) to get you being mindfully random in your exploration.

Which option do I choose?

Boxed – with this option your cards come in our custom designed cardboard box.  This is a great option for gifting and to keep all your cards together in the one place.  It also looks great matching designs with our other booster packs.  For those of you looking for the Standard Edition – it’s now rebranded as the Adventurers Boxed Edition.

Cased – Available in your choice of our 4 coloured cases made in New Zealand using a plant based plastic.  Choose this option for gifting, to keep all your cards safe and together or just because you love the case (we do too!).

The Getting Lost Game is designed and made by us – Cat & James (Kiwi Travel Bloggers), with help (and a lot of road testing) from our 3 daughters.  We create, assemble and ship them from our home in Birkenhead, Auckland and where ever we can we use local suppliers to reduce our impact on the world.

You can find out about how we designed the game here, ideas on how to play the game here.  Or you can listen to an interview with Cat over here about how to play and the idea behind the game.

We encourage you to make your own rules and the ways you can play it are endless and entirely adaptable to you.

Here’s some ideas we’ve had though…

      • For quick play, pick a new direction card at each intersection
      • For a game that lasts a couple of hours pick a new card every 5 minutes
      • Want to keep it simple?  Just keep in the direction cards (left, right, north, south etc) and take ones more likely to take you further from home
      • Looking for a weekend get away?  Play the game until you get the “head for home” card and then find a hotel or campground in what ever town you are in when you get the card
      • Don’t want to stop for treats?  Take the treat and drink card out before you start playing
      • Arrive in a new city and set off walking with the cards – take a new direction at each intersection
      • Want to surprise someone?  Add in your own card in the middle (we even make proposal cards and have been part of four proposals already!)

The Adventurers Edition comes in a suitcase designed and printed here in New Zealand using plant based, biodegradable PLA or in a box (formerly known as the Standard Edition).  It measures 100mm x 85mm x 24mm.  Your case fits the main game plus one additional 10 card booster pack.  If you need more space for extra cards we sell extra suitcases (we call these Matching Luggage) too.

Each card measures 91mm x 55mm and they’re also printed in NZ.  All packs have 26 cards with misdirection cards on one side and NZ locations (known as our inspiration cards) on the other side.

The mini compass is an optional add on (please note, this is not NZ made – the rest of your game is though).  It is 20mm (so please don’t give this to under 3’s as it is a choking hazard).  Just like Superman wears his undies on the outside we recommend you put your compass on the outside of your case too for the best fit.  Just loop the cord around the handle – easy!

The game is ideally suited to outdoor play and there are a few cards you won’t be able to use if you are on foot (like follow a white car – unless you are very quick!).  But if you do want to play on foot we recommend you add on the Booster Pack for more walking misdirections.

Please remember to play the game responsibly and make sure that you stay safe and able to get yourself back home at all times.  The compass is a toy designed for playing the game only so please don’t rely on this for directions.  Please don’t leave your case in a hot car – it will warp!  If you are leaving it in a car tuck it under a seat or in the glove box or somewhere cool.

Our Terms and Conditions are here but if you have any other questions please get in touch.

Very expensive for what you actually get especially when you compare to what games you can buy in shop for $30 odd dollars. Good game though

I bought this for quality family time with my niece. She is a rather independent young lady, so giving her the opportunity to be in charge of our adventure was very empowering for her. I am a bit suspect that the ‘stop for a treat’ card kept showing up somehow……

Bought this as a gift and they loved it. They haven’t had a chance to use it yet but they’re really looking forward to the fun. Thank you for your very fast postage.

    • Cat

Thanks Kaye. Glad they loved it – we have an awesome team delivering our parcels and they continue to blow our mind with how fast they are!

I left my game in the dinning table with some filtered sun light and the box is twisted and is not closing anymore.

    • Cat

Hi Fred, sorry to hear this. Our cases are made from PLA plastic. It’s a plant based plastic and is better for the environment but does have a lower melt point than other plastics. It will start to deform at 45 degrees celsius (and melt at 170) so a very hot house or car will cause it to deform (filtered sunlight however should not if the room is not this temperature – our games in our home based workshop sit under a skylight all day every day and do not deform). We have a warning about leaving the cases in hot places on the product page (see above) and on the invoices we send out with all our products. For us, the few cases that get deformed in extreme heat (less than a handful that we’ve heard about in the 4 years we’ve been making them) outweigh the impact to the environment of using different plastic products. I’ve sent you an e-mail too Fred as we can’t find any record of your order with this e-mail address and happy to chat more there. 🙂

The product was cheaper very soon after my purchase. Also the new version was more eco-friendly which I would have preferred.

    • Cat

Thanks for your review Lyn. We’re gutted we only managed 3 stars. It’s very rare that we have an offer on our products (only 3 in 4 years) so I’m sorry you missed out on this one. No changes to the product. Always available in a cardboard box or our plant based plastic suitcase – both eco-friendly options. 🙂

I highly recommend this as a corporate gift! We bought the Adventurer and Summer editions, compass and personalised card for each of our staff as a Christmas present. Cat made the whole process a breeze from ordering, developing the personalised card, packaging and delivery. Outstanding service. Thank you so much!

    • Cat

Thank you so much Jane. Hope all the staff have a brilliant time getting lost this Summer. 🙂

  20. Sharon Holmes

So much fun! We often play this with our children and our aunty (In her 50’s). We all love it, and spend a lot of time laughing. The perfect gift for families at Christmas.

    • Cat

Thanks for the review Sharon. We’re stoked you had such a great time. 🙂

  21. Jill

So much fun and everyone loved the unexpected activities and adventures. The highlight for the girls was dancing on the grass outside the car and the happy smiles and toots from passing cars. Loved the lockdown edition too.

    • Cat

Brilliant! Sounds like a great road trip. 🙂

  22. Cherie Oliver

We have had a lot of fun playing this. Every time is a different outcome.

One of the funniest girls weekends that we’d had for a while – great fun !!!

  24. Danielle

Such a great way to explore and spend a day off devices. We can’t wait to play again and see where we end up!

  26. Amy King

the kids absolutely love this!! They enjoy being the ‘direction instructors’ from the back seat. Would highly recommend =)

  27. Lari

Just a whole bunch of fun, We ended up at a historic pub where we stayed for the night (we tossed the go home card away). I’ve now bought plenty more for Xmas gifts.

  28. Deb Chappell

we love this game ..the grandies love it too…we start it at all sorts of different places ..they get to choose from where …we have found some amazing places we just wouldnt know about if we hadnt played

  29. Catherine

We loved this game! It was such a fun, low-pressure day out, and created a wonderful sense of adventure by not knowing where we would end up. Our lives are so full and organised, it was great to just let go and follow where the cards took us.

  30. Gaye

Unfortunately due to all the lockdowns we haven’t been able to play very much. None of our grandchildren live in our area so not being able to travel to meet up with them has limited our playtime.. However they have loved playing it, get really excited to see where we will end up. We put a time limit on how far we go, and they have fun finding their way home as well.

  31. Lian Mari San Jose

    Very fun to play
